Frank Warren: Nobody is champ until they beat the man, Wilder v Fury winner will be number one

Warren is convinced Fury will hold the imaginary ‘lineal’ tag gained by defeating Wladimir Klitschko until somebody steps forward and takes his ‘0’.

Fury fights Francesco Pianeta in Belfast this weekend knowing a victory sets up a WBC title challenge with Deontay Wilder later this year.

Wilder had attempted to secure an undisputed clash with Anthony Joshua until negotiations collapsed and all sides moved on.

“That fight has gone and in the meantime, Joshua is fighting (Alexander) Povetkin, who had a very tough fight with David Price last time which tells you a lot about this fight,” said Warren.

“Tyson has got to get this fight out of the way and if he wins then the fight with Wilder is happening.

“Wilder against Tyson Fury is the biggest fight out there, it’s a huge fight because these guys want to see who the best is. The winner of that fight will be the best heavyweight in the world and they won’t be going with a begging bowl to Anthony Joshua.

“They will be the No.1, the fans will know it – that’s what matters.”

Warren continued: “The fact is that Tyson is the lineal world champion and until they beat him they can’t call themselves the world champion.

“He didn’t pick the titles out of a dustbin, he went to Germany and won the world titles. He beat the man who was the man. He took (Wladimir) Klitschko to school and until you beat the man who beat the man you can’t call yourself the world champion.”

Joshua v Povetkin and Wilder v Fury would be the perfect semi-finals to a huge collision for all the marbles in 2019, although Dillian Whyte or the winner of Kubrat Pulev v Hughie Fury seem more likely to get the call and keep fans waiting to crown one ruler until at least 2020.
