The popular Geordie known as ‘The Benwell Bomber’ who fights in the super lightweight category, had a decorated amateur career which included boxing for England and making it to the final of the ABAs.
The 24-year-old has designs on building on his first victory in the paid ranks, when he fights on the undercard of Thomas Patrick Ward’s IBF super bantamweight European title shot at Rainton Meadows Arena, Darlington.
Discussing his second opponent, Laws told World Boxing News: “I’m fighting James Gorman from Ireland; he’s had 60 fights; he’s hard as nails and it’s going to be another testing fight.
It’s been an action packed year for Laws, but one what he thinks will stand him in good stead.
“Training has went well, it’s been hard, though. I have had three camps this year back-to-back. I came back from a holiday to Thailand in January and since then went straight into camp for the ABAs, then straight into my first pro fight and now this fight coming up.
“I haven’t had any breaks so it has been all systems go, but I feel like I have came on all systems go but I’ve came on leaps and bounds and I’m looking forward to showcasing my skills and getting another win,”
Laws already has a considerable army of fans behind him thanks to his all action, volume punching style and that showed in the support he received for his first fight.
“My support was out of this world,” Said Laws. “I want to give a big thanks to everyone who showed support – I sold over 350 tickets, it was electric. I just hope more people get on the bandwagon with each fight,”
Assessing his first paid outing, Laws admits the occasion perhaps got the better of him: ”To be honest in the first two rounds I didn’t box too well, I was just trying to play to the crowd and get the KO. But in the third I settled down, used my jab and got him out of there.”
The action from Rainton Meadows will be available to watch this Friday from 9pm on FreeSports which is available to Sky customers on channel 422 and Virgin customers on channel 130.
