Khan, currently training in the United States for a fight with Samuel Vargas in Birmingham, England in September, gave his views on the fight following a recent announcement by Matchroom Boxing.
“Povetkin is a good fighter and he was at the same Olympics as me (in 2004). He’s an Olympic gold medallist. We’ve known him since then and he’s a tough guy,” Khan told Elie Seckbach of ES News.
“It’s a good fight but I think Joshua has got his number. He’s got the height, the size and he’s at home, comfortable. I think he’s going to win that fight quite easy.”
During the interview, Khan also discussed a possible fight between himself and former training partner Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao defeated Lucas Matthysse to put himself back in the frame at the top of the welterweight division and Khan is interested in a fight down the line.
“Manny looked good, he boxed well. It was a great performance and he looked very sharp.
“I think it’s a good time for me to fight him as we are both coming off good wins.
“I have a fight coming up against Samuel Vargas on September 8th, but maybe at the end of the year or next year, it could be an amazing fight with Pacquiao.
“I don’t know what his contractual deal is like with Bob Arum but Bob’s a friend of mine,” he added.
On the performance of Lucas Matthysse, who has since faced criticism, Khan stated: “Manny looked strong but I don’t think Lucas was himself.
“We all expected Lucas to come forward and give his all but it seemed like he lost the fight before he got in the ring.”
On his own future, the Bolton man added: “I just want to get this September fight out of the way first and see where I go from here.
There are still big fights out there for me. I’ve got the Kell Brook fight also.”
