It was announced last week that Davies Jnr has signed a three-fight promotional contract with Matchroom, and his first fight will be for the British belt against Glenn Foot.

Davies Jnr was very vocal in his pursuit of promotional backing and finally got his wish after a prolonged spell of lobbying.

“Sometimes people say it’s like you’re begging, going on to social media and going on about it.” Davies Jnr exclusively told World Boxing News. “I needed big promotional backing behind me to get the fights I want and to get the other fighters in the ring with me.”

The popular scouser recently avenged his first and only career defeat when he stopped Michal Syrowtka in their rematch back in March.

Now the 28-year-old has the backing of the promotional behemoth that is Matchroom, he wants the fights that will get his career flourishing.

“Some of the fights I was taking with these foreigners – that last kid I fought, he was an Olympian. I may as well be fighting all these British kids if I’m fighting at that level, because the money wasn’t great, especially compared to the money you can get for domestic dust-ups,” pointed out Davies.

“He was a top amateur, who had been to the worlds and everything, these British kids haven’t done any of that,” he added.

Now that the World Boxing Super Series has chosen Davies Jnr’s 140 lbs division for their next season, it gives the scouser time to fight some domestic battles.

“I was trying to boost myself to get to the world scene quicker, but with this World Boxing Super Series coming around, it’s put everybody on lockdown for another 12 months.

“So I have come down to British level and I needed a good opponent that would get me up for it. I couldn’t have come back down to British level and fought a kid 10-0 with one knockout, it wouldn’t have done anything for me mentally.”

In Foot – who he’s pencilled in to fight in October in Newcastle – an opponent who will get him up for it.

“I know Glenn Foot is a good fighter and that he’s very aggressive, and always brings his A-game.

“It’s a fight that will get me up for it, and also the contract that comes with it, with Eddie and Matchroom, I couldn’t refuse it. I want the big fights and the bright lights,” concluded Davies.
