Jody Meikle to renew Shane McPhilbin rivalry on July 14

More than 4,000 fans are expected at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena on Saturday, July 14 when Meikle renews his rivalry with former British cruiserweight champion Shane McPhilbin.

The pair shared a ring twice when they were amateurs and meet again in a fight promoted by Inspire Championship Boxing.

“I’ve fought on a Ricky Burns world-title undercard and at Wembley Arena,” said Meikle, “and this is up there with the biggest shows I’ve fought on.

“There’s going to be a big crowd there – and plenty of pride at stake.

“I am friends with Shane and I was there cheering him on when he won the British title.

“But we’re going to forget out friendship for a few minutes.

“I think Shane wants to knock me out to prove a point. He wants to prove to people that he’s good enough to get the British title back.”

Meikle fought British champions, contenders and prospects throughout his 71-fight professional career – and now he’s picking up paydays on the unlicensed circuit.

“The Board took my license off me after I was sent to prison,” said the 38 year old from Scunthorpe, “but I’m still fighting every week.

“I’ve fought some decent lads and picked up a few wins here and there.

“There’s a bit more pride at stake when I fight Shane. I won’t be doing the journeyman thing. We are mates – but I want to win.”

Meikle has yet to beat McPhilbin.

Their first amateur fight ended after McPhilbin was cut by a stray elbow and the return went the Nottingham fighter’s way on the narrowest of points decisions.

The build up to their third fight is proving to be lively !

“Shane’s mates are giving me stick on social media,” said Meikle, “and I’m giving plenty back !

“We’re selling a few tickets. There should be a good atmosphere on the night.”
