Katie Taylor sends sympathy over Bray Boxing Club death, comments on ‘estranged’ father’s shooting

A gunman entered Bray Boxing Club, where world champion Katie used to train, and killed a man before firing and hitting two others – one of whom was her 57 year-old dad.

Speaking on the death of a 50 year-old patron of the gym, who was apparently murdered at random, Taylor was sympathetic to the family of the deceased but moved to distance herself from both the gym and her father after years of being estranged.

“I can’t imagine the despair or the sense of injustice they must be dealing with,” Taylor told The Irish Times.

“I’m praying they know God’s comfort in the hard days ahead.

“I understand there is still a lot of uncertainty about the nature of the incident but I’m hoping the gardaí (Irish police) will get to the bottom of it very soon.

“As many of you know, I have been somewhat estranged from my Dad for a number of years now.

“I’ve had little contact with him in the last three years and no contact or association whatsoever with Bray Boxing Club since 2015,” she added.

After the attack, Supt. Patrick Ward released a statement on the incident, saying: “They were about to start the gym session when a gunman came in carrying a firearm – we believe it was a handgun.”

Ward added that the tragic gym user who passed away was “just using the facilities like anyone else” and that a lot “more people could have been injured.”

Taylor is currently signed to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and holds two versions of the world lightweight title.
