The 32 year-old picked up the British title to add to his Commonwealth crown last month with a first round dismantling of Frank Buglioni.
Johnson did look a cut above British level in that fight and now he has suggested he would take a world title tilt were it to come his way, but he accepts it’s more likely to be two or three fights away.
“Well some people might think I’m crazy but if a world title shot came up in my next fight I’d happily take it and I would go in there confident as well, I’m a confident kind of guy,” Johnson exclusively told World Boxing News.
“I don’t speak a lot – I don’t shout a lot – I don’t shout about saying I’m this as that, but I know what I’m capable of and I believe in my own abilities.
“So if the opportunity came up in my next fight I would take it and be confident but realistically and ideally I’d have two or three fights before I got to that stage so I can get more experience.
The light-heavyweight division is an incredibly tough division to ply your trade and Johnson acknowledges this, discussing his division, he said: “At world level it’s arguably the toughest division out there.
“They are beasts but it is what it is, to be the best you have to beat the best and you have to challenge yourself against the best.”
One fight Johnson will have an eye on is Adonis Stevenson vs Badou Jack which takes place next month and he will be quietly hoping the Swedish boxer-puncher comes out on top.
“Badou Jack is fighting against Adonis Stevenson and I would like Jack to win that fight because that’s a fight two or three fights down the line I’d like to get, it’s a fight I’m very confident I could win.
“I think Badou Jack would probably suit me the best, he’s very very good but there’s nothing fancy about him, he’s very basic and I don’t mean that as an insult but he’s not awkward and he likes a fight.”
Whilst the understated Johnson knows that a world title challenge is likely to be a couple of fights down the line at least, he would be ready and willing to face whoever is put in front of him when the time comes.
“I’m not saying I’m the best in the world right now or that I’m ready for that level now, I’m just saying that I believe in two or three fights I can compete with those guys,” Johnson concluded.
