PETA send Canelo animal-free gift basket with letter urging middleweight to turn vegan

“More and more athletes are steering clear of animal flesh—which is often full of traces of hormones and antibiotics—in favor of nourishing, protein-packed vegan meals,” says PETA Latino Senior Manager Alicia Aguayo. “PETA Latino is encouraging Álvarez to join them. Not only would it help him get back in the ring, he’d also likely be faster and stronger than ever.”

PETA Latino’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat.”

PETA Latino’s letter to Canelo Álvarez follows.

Dear Canelo,

Greetings from PETA and PETA Latino, where you have many fans who were disappointed that your May 5 fight with Gennady Golovkin was canceled. We’re not surprised to hear that you believe that eating meat tainted with the steroid clenbuterol may be responsible for this unfortunate incident, as animal flesh often contains contaminants like unhealthy levels of hormones, antibiotic drug residues, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, heavy metals, and even cleaning products, such as ammonia and chlorine. One of the best things that you can do to avoid ingesting such contaminants is to go vegan, and we hope to help you get started with this basket of vegan meats and other goodies.

Vegan foods, which are naturally cholesterol-free and tend to be higher in fiber and lower in saturated fats than other foods, have many other benefits as well, especially for athletes, who are going vegan in droves in order to improve their health, performance, and recovery. From Wilson Chandler and Lewis Hamilton to Kyrie Irving and ultra-runners Scott Jurek and Rich Roll, vegan athletes are changing the face of sports. Avoiding meat, eggs, and dairy “products” can help you prevent heart disease, cancer, and diabetes—and prolong your career—and we’re here to help. PETALatino.com is a great source of recipes for vegan versions of your favorite foods, and I would be happy to provide you with any other tips or product recommendations you may need. I look forward to seeing you back in the ring soon.

Sincerely,

Alicia Aguayo

Senior Manager of PETA Latino
