Nevada Athletic Commission file Canelo complaint, seek one-year ban

The highly-anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin has seen an increase in the chances of cancellation.

Following a late round of speculation on Wednesday, Nevada State Athletic Commission chief Bob Bennett filed a complaint against Canelo which could potentially lead to a one-year ban.

As it stands, the second fight between Canelo and Golovkin is more in jeopardy today than it was yesterday but could still go either way pending a hearing now delayed until April 18.

As Bennett is seeking to penalize Canelo despite keeping his distance from the media, all roads are pointing to the fact that the NSAC believe the Mexican intentionally took a banned substance.

In the complaint, Bennett pointed out the following regarding the temporarily suspended middleweight star.

Canelo complaint

“By allowing Clenbuterol to enter his system, Alvarez engaged in conduct that reflected discredit to unarmed combat and he is guilty of foul or unsportsmanlike conduct that was detrimental to a contest.”

Golden Boy certainly doesn’t seem worried about the outcome but behind the scenes may will be seething at the prospect of losing a money-spinning Las Vegas show on May 5th.

The Mexican superstar was ‘business as usual’ and training as hard as ever for his regular Cinco de Mayo date, as two recent video posts by GBP have shown, but now faces the real possibility of a spell on the sidelines,

Should the clash be shelved at this late stage, Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is hopeful of holding onto the date and venue, with a top replacement being eyed to keep the big-punching Kazakh active until the Canelo situation is sorted out.

Pushing back the fight for one year would put Golovkin at a disadvantage purely due to father time, as ‘GGG’ would be 37 years old by the time they eventually shared a ring for the second time.

Replacements have already been put forward should Canelo be pulled out by the NSAC, with Demetrius Andrade, Gary O’Sullivan and Sergey Derevyanchenko leading the candidates.

Andrade’s promoter Artie Pellulo recently told WBN his fighter was more than ready to oppose Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena.

“When it comes to Demetrius Andrade stepping in, it’s a fight we’ve been trying to get for him and would love to take if the possibility came up.

“He’s already preparing for the 12th or 19th of May and Demetrius is always in the gym. It’s a great fight for the fans!”
