Smith previously defended his WBO super-welterweight title against Canelo Alvarez in Dallas, losing via stoppage in front of a massive audience.

This time around, Smith will be the challenger when facing Miguel Cotto conqueror Sadam Ali for his old world title belt.

Confirming the news, promoter Frank Warren stated ‘The Big Apple’ was the probable destination for the Liverpool man.

“Yeah we’ve agreed terms with Golden Boy,” Warren told BoxNation’s Podcast.

“The fight’s going to be on some time in May. Looks like it’s going to be New York, just waiting for them to confirm the date.

“It’s all done, and hopefully he can reclaim his title. It’s a fight that I think he can win.

“He’s had good grounding, he never turns down anybody Liam.

“If he comes through that, hopefully we can get some good defences here in the UK.”

On Smith’s resolve to take on any of the top stars in the division, Warren added: “He’s one of those sorts of guys.

“He fought Canelo in Dallas (with) 50-odd thousand people. He handled that so well that week. There won’t be a question of him melting on the night,” he said.

Also on episode 15 of the BoxNation Podcast, Frank Warren answers questions from the fans.

Steve Lillis has a rant about fighters missing weight and there’s a world exclusive snippet from the Lee Selby v Josh Warrington Face Off.
