Stevenson blasts out Fonfara, Alvarez beats Pascal, Kudryashov avenges Durodola loss

The veteran, a belt holder since 2013, gave Fonfara a second chance after previously out-pointing the Pole back in 2014.

Stevenson was on a mission though and dropped Fonfara in the first before finishing the job the very next round.

After the contest, Stevenson revealed his tactics were down to combatting the danger posed by his opponent.

“I was focused on the fight, and you saw what happened,” Stevenson said.

“My hands were moving very good, and you saw what happened. Fonfara tried, but I was ready for this fight.

“I know Fonfara is very dangerous. He’s a good fighter, so I was very focused on him. When I had the chance to catch him I caught him. I took my time and I finished the job,” he added.

Fonfara himself was philosophical in defeat.

“I have a family. He knows that. He wants to protect me,” Fonfara said. “Stevenson is a great fighter. He has a hard left hand, and he could have hurt me more.

“Stevenson is a great fighter. He has a hard left hand, and he could have hurt me more. This rematch didn’t go like I want. He won the fight. That’s all.”

In the co-feature, Eleider Alvarez booked his spot opposite Stevenson next by scoring a majority decision over former world title holder Jean Pascal.

Alvarez took the fight 117-111 and 116-112 on the cards, whilst a third judge called the fight even at 114-114.

Elsewhere in Russia, Dmitry Kudryashov avenged the only loss on his record with a fifth round knockout of Olanrewaju Durodola at the Rostov Sport Palace.

Kudryashov is now the number one contender to Mairis Breidis and should get his shot over the next few months.

Breidis has signed up for the newly-announced World Boxing Super Series arranged by Ringstar and Sauerland, meaning the Russian may be advised to do the same in order to guarantee himself an imminent chance.
