The World Boxing Association Vice President Gilberto Mendoza has confirmed that, as reported by WBN last week, the current standing will determine who gets the chance, with Haye currently in top spot head of Cuban Luis Ortiz.
Haye, 32, fights Tyson Fury on February 8 before his potential world title shot, although Mendoza did elude to the fact that the Londoner’s upcoming domestic super-fight has no chance of having the vacant belt up for grabs due to Fury’s low-ranking with the body.
“We have not yet considered the possibility of sanctioning a regular title for the heavyweights and we will not make any offer,” Mendoza told World Boxing News when asked if Haye v Fury could be considered.
Mendoza then added: “If we decided to do it, we must go by the rankings hierarchy (of which Haye is one and Ortiz is two).
“The rankings haven’t changed (Haye and Ortiz are highest), but we have not yet thought of when we will be approving a regular title fight in the heavyweights.”
Miami-based southpaw Ortiz, who has 16 stoppages form his 19 wins, stands above fellow-unbeaten puncher Denis Boytsov in the latest WBA list of heavyweights, with a new set of rankings due out at any moment.
The’ Hayemaker’ has stated his desire to face either of the Klitschko brother’s in the future, although would certainly find the chance to reclaim the belt he originally won in 2009 hard to turn down.
Becoming a two-time WBA champion could be the best way for Haye to entice Wladimir or Vitali into the ring for another high-profile battle, which places even more emphasis on the former cruiserweight king ending Fury’s perfect record in four months time.
