Mayweather Promotions fighter Badou Jack is ready to shake off the prospect tag as the undefeated super-middleweight gears up to face dangerous Mexican Marco Periban at the MGM Grand tomorrow night.
The 29 year-old is one of a number of potential world champions lined up on a stacked event. It marks the beginning of the preparations for the massive clash between Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez on Saturday night.
Swedish-born Jack, who now fights out of Las Vegas himself, is looking forward to being part of the biggest fight week in recent memory in Nevada and believes a victory over recent WBC title challenger Periban will elevate him to the top end of the division.
Badou Jack talks exclusively to World Boxing News
“It feels great to be a part of this event,” Jack told World Boxing News. “I can’t wait to beat Periban and take my career to the next level. I’m excited!
“It’s a great experience. I’m excited to be a part of history. I am facing a good opponent and feel ready for the challenge.
“Although Periban lost Sakio Bika, it was a fan-friendly fight, and I believe he is a solid fighter. I think he brings out the best of me and allows me to show my talent.”
Some in the sport thought that Periban, 28, was unlucky to drop a majority decision to Bika in June, meaning that the Mexican number one could well have been defending a world title instead of squaring up to the ‘Money Team’ member. There was talk of a potential rematch between the now-champion Bika and Periban, but that ultimately failed to materialize.
The winner of Thursday’s clash now in a position to possibly be considered by the WBC for a future title shot.
