Jermall Charlo slates Smith v Molina, backs Mayweather ahead of MGM bout

The 23 year-old, who has racked up fifteen straight wins since turning pro in 2008, is scheduled for a ten-rounder against an opponent yet to be named at the MGM Grand and is relishing the chance to feature during such a massive fight week.

“It’s a chance to actually see what the main stage looks like,” Charlo told World Boxing News. “I’ve been patient and active so I’ll be headlining something like this in my future.

“I am not too worried who my opponent is as Al Haymon does a good Job in making sure I get in the ring so I’m not worried.”

Asked whether he has any possible interest in the Mayweather v Canelo undercard bout between IBF 154lb champion Ishe Smith and Carlos ‘King’ Molina as potential future opponents, Charlo was decidedly unimpressed with the contest.

“I’m not really interested in Smith v Molina as I have seen both guys fight live and wasn’t impress with their styles,” stated Charlo.

“I’m young and hungry and neither of them could figure me out. That fights is going to be a sloppy brawl as both guys love taking punches.”

The main event of the proceedings in Las Vegas is another fight in Charlo’s weight class, with the Texan siding with the majority in believing that pound for pound king Mayweather will have too much for the younger Alvarez when they battle on Saturday night.

“Canelo is ahead of his time but not quite ready for Mayweather. Style make fights and his stylistically Canelo a perfect come forward match up for Floyd.

“You have to make Mayweather fight uncomfortable and set a pace he doesn’t want to fight at and I would only give Canelo a puncher’s chance of winning that fight,” he added.

Charlo is currently touted as one of the top stars of the future at 154 along with brother Jermell, and will have another chance to impress when he steps in to the ring this week.
