Canelo faces potentially damaging weight-loss in final week

The 23 year-old is just a week away from the biggest fight of his career against Mayweather and hasn’t hit weight under 153lbs since 2011 when defeating Matthew Hatton for the WBC light-middleweight title.

Some would say losing just under six pounds in a week is routine for a boxer, but I’d say it’s not ideal when you are heading into the biggest fight of you career against the best boxer in the business. Whether ‘Canelo’ can drop the weight sufficiently and hit 152 to keep all of his strength and power is the big question. But to me it seems like Mayweather’s weight stipulation was a masterstroke that could be the deciding factor in the big Las Vegas bout.

Alvarez puts on huge amounts of weight after hitting the scales for his fights and attempting a weight unattained for a long period before adding a mass amount will eventually take an effect on the young fighter’s body, probably in the later rounds.

A defeat for Alvarez next Saturday night may lead to an immediate step-up to middleweight for the unified 154lb champion, where clashes against Gennady Golovkin and Sergio Martinez could be some consolation to the fans and the fighter himself.

Mayweather, 36, must be rubbing his hands with glee at having to put on five pounds for picking up an additional mammoth cheque for his coffers, with ‘Money’ able to sit back at 152.5lbs and enjoy fight week as Alvarez frets right up until Friday’s weigh-in.
